Project Information


113Research presents three or four exhibits/projects per academic year. Our fall exhibit is open themed often highlighting work by a researcher/creator from the larger academic/art communities, winter is often focused on OCAD projects that deal with institutional change and pedagogy, and graduate and undergraduate students in the Project Working Team develop a project and curate a student exhibit in the spring or we present a thesis research project. We invite work from students, staff, faculty, and guests. Socially engaged projects are especially welcomed. Proposals are reviewed on an ongoing basis by the Director and the Head Curator and Project Working Team sometimes in consultation with the Advisory Committee. 

All exhibits are facilitated by the Working Team with mentored student curatorial leaders. The Project Working Team may work with artists or groups to provide corollary project outreach events depending on the yearly makeup of the team and their interests and availability. All of us are volunteers. 113Research is a co-curricular project space associated with Art & Design Education Lab (ADEL) a "program" at OCADU that focuses on interpretive planning and pedagogy for museums and galleries. Its intent is to foster community/visitor engagement.

Guest Researcher-in-Residence (August - September 2023): Sarah Shelton recently graduated from Colgate University with a double major in Educational Studies and Psychology. She was awarded a Watson Fellowship, a grant to pursue a project of the fellow's choice. Accordingly, she was pursuing disability justice and disability art-related activities in Toronto.

113 Galleries Descriptions:

Vitrine Gallery:

The Main Vitrine Space is comprised of four glass-covered shallow cabinets on the 5th floor of 113 McCaul Street, at OCAD University. We do not have video or audio capabilities in the vitrine gallery and recommend that the work be two-dimensional. If you wish to share video or sound, you can use online platforms such as YouTube and QR codes or your exhibit may use our permanent video gallery adjacent to the vitrine gallery space. Video and sound work can also be shared on this website.  A didactic is provided beside and to the left of the vitrine gallery for each exhibit.

The  Main Vitrine Gallery is comprised of two window box vitrine spaces. They appear as four separate windows as there is a central opening on each and a wood frame surround. Each window gallery vitrine space (beneath each of the two windows that open) is 64" high and 52" + 52" (104" total). We recommend any individual "didactics" within the windows be no larger than 39.5" wide X 19.5 " high. We can adhere small clear labels to the outside of the windows as well. The depth from the back wall to the window is about 5".

The external exhibition didactic usually measures 36" wide to 38" high, up to a maximum of 76" high. It is mounted and attached to the wall to the left of the windows.

Annex Space:

The Annex Space is a lime green-walled lounge area with two facing walls and one central window wall that looks out over the campus. We use this annex area for further display of the work by a Vitrine Gallery artist or for curating a separate show. This area is suited to works on canvas or works on paper. Please note that chairs are used in the space so there might be some concern for damage. Think approximately 3' from floor to mid-wall to accommodate chair height. 

The Annex Space dimensions are approximately the same for both north and south walls (this is measured as useable space from pipe to floor, the window is between)  8' high  X 12' wide. We display small didactics here with artist's name, bio, exhibit title, artist statement, and individual works information.

Notes:

Please be aware that we do not guarantee the safety of the work as this is an unsupervised hallway gallery space. The work in the vitrines is generally safe as the doors close. However, we ask that the artist be responsible for insuring all their work. 

We are unable to accommodate sculpture or video work. Video may be shown using QR codes linked to an online site and we can host video (linked to YouTube) on this website. 

Exhibits in all spaces are generally on display for about three months. We invite winter term pedagogical projects to consider presenting for the FCDC Teaching Expo, and, if applicable, spring/summer research projects may be shared with the OCAD Summer Institute. 

We do not have the funds to provide artist fees but recommend and will support applications for OAC Exhibition Assistance Grants for those applying from Ontario. Please investigate funding sources from your home communities. We provide gallery install assistance, cover the design, printing and installation costs of didactics, and list exhibit information on the gallery/project blog and through the OCAD website.

113Research receives minimal funding for our spring student curated exhibition thanks to Centre for Emerging Artists and Designers (CEAD), OCADU.

Paint used for Exterior Gallery Walls:

(We cannot change the colour of the external gallery walls but could possibly repaint the interior of the vitrine. The artist would be responsible for the paint cost and the painting and the return of the gallery to its original colour.)

Opening May 01 -- We Perform, To Perform

  In Vitrine, Annex Lounge, and Video Galleries work by  Sissie He, Jordan King, Billie MacFarland, Rae Sigrist and Kiley Brennan.   In To Perform, We Perform we draw our curatorial premise from Judith Butler's 1988 text Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory. Butler here offers insight into how one might "trouble gender". This exhibit poses the promise of how potential performative deviations – relating to gender and elsewhere - however slight, could affect social and cultural change.  We invited artists to consider how the (re)performance of transgressions - in a range of mediums - might have an impact on affecting new perceptions of (dis)ability, materiality, gender, sustainability, and even survival.  Photograph:  Ephemeral Pops by  Sissy He.

OPENING Hollis McConkey: Phases (In and Out). Curated by Sarah Shelton & Lauchlin MacQuarrie. Sept.01 - Oct 23

  In Phases (In and Out) , Hollis McConkey speaks indirectly to her own disabilities by addressing her sister’s lived disability experience. Hollis invited her sister Charlotte to write down her feelings and struggles in living daily with a painful disability. This resultant collection – scraps of paper, napkins, and wrappers – exposes the viewer to the consistent and exhausting nature of surviving with certain disabilities. In addition, Hollis unpacks the TTC’s accessibility poster campaign. Despite appearing in street cars, buses, and subway trains across the city, the TTC’s poster is often passed over and misunderstood by travellers in the rush of commuting The resulting dissonance between the TTC’s ineffective poster campaign and Hollis’ sister’s visceral writing opens the viewer to questioning how a lack of visibility further disables people with invisible disabilities.
